Music-maker of many shapes.
Singer, multi-instrumentalist, musicologist.
Sometimes dancer, sometimes writer, sometimes wanderer.
Joana Guiné is a singer (mezzo-soprano), multi-instrumentalist (recorder, clarinet, frame drums), performer, and musicologist from Portugal. Her primary interest lies in exploring the ever-shifting spaces that separate and connect different musical genres, historical periods, cultures, and art forms.

Joana’s journey with music began at the age of 14 when she simultaneously started studying singing, recorder, and clarinet. She graduated in Musicology in 2013 and pursued a Masters in Ethnomusicology at NOVA University of Lisbon, focusing on traditional dance, the interplay between early music and oral traditions, and gender studies.

In 2015, she moved to the Netherlands, where she completed a Bachelor’s in Recorder at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2020) and another in Classical Singing at the Utrechts Conservatorium (2023). She studied voice with Selma Harkink and Xenia Meijer and attended masterclasses with Margreet Honig and Lawrence Zazzo.

Currently based in Basel, Switzerland, Joana is studying with countertenor Carlos Mena.

Her performance career has always oscillated between early music, contemporary music, and traditional/folk music. She has created several ensembles that navigate these diverse realms, including B’rbicacho, Giesta, and Ensemble La Sirena. In 2024, she joined the internship program NKK NXT, a project by the Nederlands Kamerkoor, which led to the formation of Ensemble CIRCE.

Beyond music, Joana has been a dancer since the age of 11, primarily engaged in traditional and historical dance. She often leads workshops in these areas. Since 2021, she has studied BMC (Body-Mind Centering) with Marisa Grande and physical theatre with Virág DezsÅ‘ and Wilfred van de Peppel. Her interdisciplinary performances frequently incorporate movement as an essential element.

In addition to her performative endeavors, Joana is deeply passionate about vocal pedagogy. She has taught singing since 2019 and worked as a vocal coach for choirs since 2022. She has taken vocal pedagogy courses with David Jones and continues to expand her knowledge, exploring vocal techniques that transcend the classical tradition.

Joana’s philosophy about the voice is encapsulated in her belief: Singing is a human right. Everyone can and should sing.
